Farm Manager


Job Description

In August 2012, Southern Cross Foods acquired Fiji Dairy Ltd - Fiji’s National Dairy Company. Based in Suva, the dairy plant manufactures a range of dairy products including pasteurised milk, UHT Milk, powdered milk, butter, yoghurts, cheese, fresh and sour cream, and various other flavoured dairy products. In addition to the running of the dairy plant, Fiji Dairy Limited is actively involved in establishing and promoting ‘best-practice’ dairy farms to help local farmers get better yield and better quality milk

The Farm manager is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the farms.This position reports to the General Manager, Fiji Dairy Pte Limited.

1. Farm Operations Management
  • Oversee and manage the dairy procedures implemented are strictly followed to ensure quality of milk
  • Adhering to required standards of Dairy hygiene.
  • Managing and supervising the identification of milk contamination contributing factors is ensured and reported timely for decision making.
  • Record checking of all documentation and ensuring record keeping is complete whilst up to date.
  • Ensuring milk harvesting is timely, and as per the required standards.
  • Safeguarding dairy plant and equipment cleanliness and maintained according to the required standards.
  • Seek management approval on feed supplies and ensuring timely delivery
  • Liase with suppliers for materials to accommodate any new or old maintenance work being carried out at the farm.
  • Ensure company property maintenance works whilst safeguarding proper machineries are available for a smooth running of farm operations.
  • Ensure projects aligned with the strategies are executed to attain development of farm in achieving its goals.
  • Plan, propose and manage future development plans of the farms upon management discreation.
2. Management of Herd feeding
  • Daily pasture allocation is timely and within agreed feed budget
  • Work closely with farm supervisor to oversee and manage pasture growth whilst working closely with farm supervisor.
  • Feed budget process and feed budgeting is managed on a timely basis.
  • Ensuring compound checks on break up fences for grazing paddocks and feeding out.
  • Assuring drinking water availability for all cows is facilitated.
  • Pasture Renovation Development Program is ensured at all times
3. Health, Safety & Welfare of Animals
  • Veterinarian assistance from Ministry of Agriculture is timely                  
    • Reports from Farm Supervisor in regards to Mastitis in cows are identified and treated in a timely manner are ensured.
    • Ensure unwell animals are identified and treated timely in accordance to the farm protocols.
    • Lameness in cows are identified and treated in a timely manner.
    • Bloating or suspected bloating reported to senior management for facilitation of remedial action on a timely basis.
    • Any other animal health problems are identified for timely remedial action.
  • Handling of animals in accordance with procedures at all times ensured.
  • Oversee and manage animal fatalities.
  • Animal health programs and regular vaccinations ensured on a timely and accurate manner.
4. Well informed management
  • Timeliness, quality and accuracy of verifying daily, weekly reports received from farm supervisor and submitting monthly reports to management ensured.
  • Ad-hoc information requests by management and shareholders, for decision-making purposes, addressed in a timely manner 
  • Farm operations related advice, both general and technical provided to management as and when required.
5. Effective Human Capital Management ensures a productive, stable and increasingly capable workforce
  • Supervision of and professional guidance to entire operation of the farm and staffs.
  • Training needs and competency gaps of staff assessed and managed in partnership with General Manager and HR Department.
  • Approving for payroll of farm staff's time sheet received by farm supervisor on its accuracy and timeliness.                               
    • Overtime approvals, leave approvals.
  • Succession planning ensured.
6. Safe work environment promoted and ensured at all times
  • Work place safety is ensured.                            
    • Communication of Safety, Health and Environment to all team members are on an on-going basis.
    • Occupational Health & Safety systems promote zero workplace injury at all times.
    • Local environmental regulation is aligned with work place safety on an on-going basis.
    • Personal protective equipment is ensured.                                                    
      • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) availability is in time.
  • Workplace hazards eliminated at all times.                     
    • Systems assist in the identification and elimination of work place hazards on an on-going basis.

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Minimum of three to five years' of experience in farm management
  2. Knowledge regarding Pregnancy Diagnosis of cows and Artificial insemination in dairy cattle and livestock vaccinations.
  3. Computer literate and good documentation skills
  4. Knowledge in Food safety management system, Good manufacturing practices, labor handling and root cause analysis
