Senior IT Officer


Job Description

Fiji Sun is a daily newspaper published in Fiji since September 1999 and owned by Sun News (Fiji) Pte Limited. Fiji Sun offers a large and desirable audience across all platforms of print, digital, mobile, tablet and responsive site and one of the largest news brand in the South Pacific bringing the best and latest in Fiji's current affairs, sports, events, analysis and business news.

The Senior IT Officer is responsible for maintaining the computer networks, providing technical support and ensuring the end users are provided a conducive ICT enabled work environment using the necessary computing tools and resources to maximize their productivity.

1. Network and Hardware Infrastructure Support Optimization
  • Installation and configuration of computer hardware operating systems and applications in a timely manner in liaison with Group IT Manager. 
    • Troubleshoot system and network problems, diagnosing and solving hardware faults on an ongoing basis
  • Performance of inhouse systems monitored ensuring issues are appropriately escalated and resolved
  • Systems and data security maintained at a high standard, ensuring the integrity of the companies network is not compromised.
    • Manage backups and data recovery of critical data including system updates and maintaining archival of large data sets.
    • Ensure compliance with ICT licensing, warranty and information security systems and procedures to protect network and data.
  • ICT Fixed asset inventory updated in a timely manner 
    • Audit for all fixed assets - computer users conducted in a timely and accurate manner 
    • Recommendations for write-offs based on fixed assets inventory to dispose obsolete computers in accordance with ICT policy provided
    • Maintain accurate asset register for the business ensuring all inventory is accounted for.

  • Lead on the procurement of ICT systems and services with a sound knowledge of the procurement procedures, providing prompt information to Group IT and Finance Team as required.
    • Hardware type and specification recommended for end users that is best suited for their scope of work.
    • Procurement of IT equipment recommended in accordance with company policies and procedures and within agreed budget
  • ICT Best Practice and good ethic promoted and advocated at all times when dealing with end users
    • Understand the dynamic business requirements and work with the print and digital team to ensure the business keeps up to date with new and emerging technologies.
  • Management of online services including the websites and social media platforms
2. User support ensured
  • Supervise the team to deliver an effective ICT Support service and review opportunities for improvements.
  • First point of ICT Technical Support provided for all end users in a timely manner
  • Staff and users assisted through a series of actions, either face to face; email or over the telephone to help set up systems or resolve issues in a timely fashion. 
  • Troubleshoot technical issues to resolution 
  • Proper and timely escalation of unresolved issues ensured to enable supervisors to find quick resolution
3. Team Management
  • Preparation of work plans (annual, monthly and weekly basis) for the team
    • Delegation of work and supervise staff
  • Staff developed and motivated to ensure they achieve maximum performance.
    • Regular feedback provided to staff ensuring it is accurate, objective and helpful.
    • Training, support, direction and guidance to department personnel provided to continually develop their work habits and job skills 
  • Communication of work expectations and timescales with the team during daily briefings.
  • Disciplinary or performance issues in line with company procedures managed, seeking advice from Line Manager and HR as required.
  • Induction for all new staff conducted
  • Annual performance appraisal completed for direct reports

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in a similar role.
  2. Working knowledge of Graphics Design, Desktop Publishing & printing related software and technologies.
  3. Good Communication and people management skills
  4. Strong understanding of roles and features of Microsoft Windows Server and client operating systems
  5. Knowledge of Online Content management systems such as WordPress and latest technologies in Web design/development & Mobile applications
  6. A team player and ability to deliver tasks to strict deadlines.
  7. Willing and able to work night shifts and weekends if rostered as we operate 24/7.
