Financial Accountant


Job Description

SUN Insurance (SUN) Company Limited is the only Fiji owned and operated General Insurance Company listed recently on SPX. With a network of agents and branches spread across Fiji Islands we aspire to be the one stop shop for all General Insurance needs for all Fijians.

The Financial Accountant is responsible for maintaining overall financial operations of the company and ensuring accurate and timely preparation of the financial reports. This role reports to the Manager Finance and Company Secretary.

Organisational Stakeholders
1. Financial transactions completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Compilation and submission of all financial reporting/ statements ensured
  • Month end financial reports (Profit and Loss including department P&L, Balance sheet, flash reports) prepared and submissions made by due dates
  • Monthly financial accounts, six monthly consolidated financial statement, and the annual consolidated financial statements, including tax calculations, prepared and submitted in a timely manner
  • Spearhead the Financial Planning and Analysis process in preparation and compilation of the OPEX budget for Annual financial year with consultation with the various departments.
  • Supervise and coordinate the external audit for the respective financial year together with preparing the consolidated financial statements with timely sign offs
  • Identify and develop qualitative and quantitative reviews to develop reports that aid in decision making.
  • Assistance provided to the Manager Finance in:  
    • Financial analysis and analytical report preparation
    • Annual operating and CAPEX budget preparation
    • Monitor budget regularly
    • Monitor costs regularly and raise concerns as required 
    • Ensure accurate required information for the Annual Report is submitted in a timely manner
  • Various journal reconciliations prepared and reviewed, and journals posted                        
    • Review journals posted by Finance staff
  • Recommendations submitted to the Director Finance and Manager Finance based on the revenue reports
  • Reconciliation of month end balance sheet accounts ensured
  • Monthly reports discussed with each division and advice provided on financial performance
  • All statutory, VAT, PAYE, FNPF, FBT, FNU levy and company advance tax payments ensured before the deadline                  
    • Handle all company tax matters effectively 
  • New vendors and customers vetted and reviewed in the financial software
  • Monthly management file submitted for reviews
  • Consolidated Financial Statements and tax payments submitted in a timely manner to respective stakeholders
  • Preparation and lodgment of quarterly and annual Reserve Bank of Fiji returns. Respond to RBF queries for returns submissions.
  • The finalized budget vetted and the segments P&L uploaded in the financial software 
  • General /Subsidiary Ledgers closed after the finalization of the audit                      
    • Vet before it is closed on the Live Database
  • Chart of accounts and the fixed asset register maintained efficiently
2. All departmental objectives addressed and completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Management and alignment of work practices with all Company policies and procedures including partnership agreements
  • Compilation, review and submission of monthly reports ensured
  • Department's standard operating procedures (SOP) are relevant, up to date and effectively communicated                          
    • SOPs further developed to ensure ongoing operational efficiency
    • Business process flows maintained and monitored as per company requirements

    • Check payment voucher and LPO approvals as per delegated limit
    • Oversee, check and approve revenue invoices, credit applications, vouchers, bank summaries, deposits, cheques below $5k

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards / GAAP and how these apply to SUN Insurance
  2. Relevant working experience of at least 8 years with more than 5 years in a leadership / supervisory role.
  3. Proven leadership and management abilities / skills.
  4. Demonstrated Audit experience will be an advantage.
  5. Thorough knowledge and demonstrated ability in the development of annual budgets.
