Port Controller [Lautoka]


Job Description

The Fiji Ports Corporation PTE Limited (FPCL) is a major player in the maritime transporting industries and the operator of commercial port facilities in Fiji.

Responsbile for assisting with daily vessel traffic control. This role reports to the Deputy Harbour Master at HM Suva; and reports to the Harbour Master at HM Lautoka.

1. Effective support provided with vessel traffic control and records/logs maintained in an efficient and timely manner:
  • Radio communications established and maintained effectively on VHF channel 16 &12
  • All navigational hazards monitored and reported within the designated port limit
  • Vessel movements controlled within port limits
    • Record vessel traffic
  • Berthing positions marked on the direction of the DHM
  • Vessel arrival and departures coordinated with service providers effectively
  • Vessel application and movements logged in a timely manner
    • log maintained efficiently
  • Pilotage data recorded efficiently
    • monthly movement of all pilots and vessel type
2. Port safety regulations and other relevant port requirements implemented and monitored effectively:
  • Incidents/accidents/activities occurring during hours of watch recorded diligently
    • immediate reports provided to the relevant departments and authorities, and to the DHM
  • OHS, ISPS and other Ports requirements implemented and enforced efficiently
    • marine regulations observed and enforced effectively within the designated port areas
    • Safety and Security liaised with as and when required in regards to incidents/accidents and relevant activities
    • the Emergency Response Protocol maintained, updated and planned in liaison with the DHM, Enforcement Officer and COO
3. All required departmental operational objectives addressed and completed in a timely and efficient manner:
  • Log books maintained and updated efficiently
  • Effective assistance provided with the development, update and implementation of the standard operating procedures and policies for operations specific to the scope of work
  • All of port controlling operations' filing systems are intact, accessible and up to date 
4. Contributions made to the organisation's success proactively:
  • Deadlines and service level agreements met at all times
  • Any other work-related task assigned by the Management that is within the capacity of the position holder is performed; teamwork is demonstrated
  • Contributions made towards the organization's efficiency and improved productivity within -
    • cost reduction initiatives
    • process/systems improvement initiatives
  • Contributions made towards the organization's profits in line with the scope of the work

Qualifications

Preferred
School Leaving A Form 6 pass. Also a Radio Operator Certificate

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Minimum of 3 years of experience in Port Operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of local regulatory requirements
  3. Knowledge of port boundaries
  4. Proficient in the use of VHF Radio
  5. Reasonable proficiency with Microsoft Office, Visio and FPCL online reporting systems
