Job Description

Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) trading as Solomon Power is a state-owned enterprise established under the Electricity Act 1969 and governed by the State-Owned Enterprises Act 2007 and the associated regulations. Solomon Power owns, maintains, and operates the country’s national electricity grid. Solomon Power generates, transmits, distributes and sells electricity in the Solomon Islands.

The Machinist is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and fabricating mechanical components and equipment critical to the efficient operation of Solomon power generation plant. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing precision machining, and ensuring all machinery and systems operate safely and reliably. The Machinist collaborates with plant engineers and maintenance teams to support continuous plant performance, adhere to safety standards, and minimize equipment downtime. The role demands a high level of technical skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and environmental standards to ensure the reliable and safe generation of power. The role from time to time and depending on availability may be require to assist in planned or unplanned maintenance related activities at both Lunga/Honiara and other Solomon Power, Power Station. This role reports to the Mechanical Engineer Operation

1. Reading technical Machining drawings
  • Read and interpret detailed parts blueprints, sketches, and instructions to guide work
  • Use measuring tools and inspection techniques to verify the accuracy and quality of machined parts
  • Accurate operating machining tools ensured
2. Preventive Maintenance
  • Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly control and management of all workshop machine tools.
    •  Setting up and operating various machines such as lathe, drill presses, grinders and Welders.
    • Inspecting finished machine parts, and ensuring quality finish to standards and specification is achieved.
  • Create new or repair existing parts and ensure they meet specific finish dimensions and tolerances.
3. Repairs and Modifications
  • Maintaining accurate records of repairs and modifications tools
    • Conduct routine inspections of all workshop machine tools to confirm they are safe and suitable for operation
    • Inspect all workshop power and hand tools regularly to ensure they meet safe working standards
    • Liaise with the Mechanical Coordinator to obtain approval for the replacement of damaged or unsafe tools
  • Manage the workshop floor space efficiently to facilitate smooth operations
4. Advice, support and training provided efficiently
  • Awareness on repair processes and procedures of machines created efficiently
    • educate internal stakeholders

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. 3 -5 years of working as a workshop machinist experience
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of generator controls and protection and ancillary equipment
  3. Computer literate with good working knowledge of MS Office software
  4. Appreciation and knowledge of safety policies, procedures and requirements
  5. Results oriented and ability to deliver outcomes under pressure and difficult circumstances
