Job Description

The Fiji Museum is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of Fiji’s Indigenous people and the diverse communities that have settled in the country over the past 200 years. As the national museum, it collects, cares for, and shares over 10,000 objects, textiles, artworks, archaeological finds, natural history specimens, and archival photographs. Through these collections, the museum tells the story of Fiji’s history. Established in 1904, the museum was created to protect and preserve Fiji’s cultural heritage and to provide a space for the public to engage with and appreciate the nation’s rich and diverse history

The role is responsible for the development and delivery of visitor experience programmes including events, education programmes, community outreach initiatives, volunteer engagement and public programming aligned with Fiji Museum exhibitions, collections and archaeology programmes. The role ensures visitor engagement, educational impact, and community participation while supporting the Museum’s cultural, heritage and learning mandate. The role reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Annual events calendar is planned and implemented including exhibitions programmes, cultural events and national commemorations.
  • Public programmes are designed and delivered to increase visitor participation and community engagement.
  • Experience programming is aligned with exhibitions, collections and archaeology programmes in collaboration with Technical Services.
  • Programme participation levels, visitor feedback and engagement metrics are monitored and reported.

3. Volunteer, Intern and Docent Programmes Managed
  • Volunteer and docent programmes are coordinated including recruitment, training and scheduling.
  • Internships and student placement programmes are administered in collaboration with educational institutions.
  • Orientation and induction programmes are delivered for volunteers, interns and tour facilitators.
  • Visitor tours and guided experiences are organised to support exhibitions and educational activities.
  • Compliance requirements including clearances and documentation for programme participants are maintained.
4. Visitor Experience Operations Managed
  • Visitor experience operations are coordinated to ensure high quality visitor engagement.
  • Operational procedures for public programming, events and visitor activities are implemented and maintained.
  • External service providers and programme partners are managed to support visitor experience delivery.
  • Programme logistics, resources and scheduling are coordinated to support efficient operations.
  • Programme outcomes and visitor engagement data are monitored and reported to management.
5. Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships Maintained
  • Partnerships with cultural organisations, community groups, schools and universities are established and maintained.
  • Collaborative programmes with government agencies, cultural institutions and NGOs are developed.
  • Programme partnerships contribute to expanded public engagement and heritage education.
  • External stakeholders are engaged to support programme sponsorships and collaborative initiatives.

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Minimum five years relevant professional experience in visitor experience, education programming, cultural programming, tourism operations, or community engagement, including at least three years in a supervisory or management role responsible for programme planning, coordination and staff oversight.
  2. Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering public programmes, educational activities, cultural events, or visitor engagement initiatives within museums, cultural institutions, tourism organisations, heritage agencies, or related sectors.
  3. Strong knowledge of programme planning, event coordination, community outreach, and visitor engagement practices including the ability to design inclusive programmes that attract diverse audiences.
  4. Experience working with schools, universities, community organisations, and cultural groups to develop educational programmes, outreach activities, and collaborative heritage initiatives.
  5. Experience managing volunteers, interns, or community facilitators including recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision.
  6. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multi stakeholder activities including exhibitions programming, outreach initiatives, and public events.
  7. Understanding of heritage interpretation, museum education practices, and cultural engagement approaches that support visitor learning and participation.
