Job Description

Fiji Pine Group (FPG) is a state-owned forestry and wood-processing organisation in Fiji, responsible for the sustainable management of the country’s pine plantation resources. The Group is involved in plantation establishment, harvesting, timber processing, and the supply of wood products for local and export markets. Through its various subsidiary companies, Fiji Pine Group (FPG) plays a key role in supporting rural employment, landowner participation, and the long-term development of Fiji’s forestry sector while promoting sustainable and responsible forest management.

Manager Carriage Sawmill will develop and implement operational plans and monthly targets and ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the carriage sawmill and achievement of set performance targets.

1. Operation Management
  • Ensure effective management of the carriage sawmill operations for Tropik Wood Industries Limited.
  • Responsible for the overall management and coordination of the production of timber products on the carriage sawmill site.
  • Provide active support and a positive contribution to the wider operational team.
  • Maintain commercial quality requirements and obligations.
  • Ensure that the work environment reflects a strong focus on quality, continuous improvement and workplace health and safety practices.
  • Plan and carry out preventative maintenance programs for the carriage sawmill in accordance with professional engineering standards.
  • Ensure recovery is maximized at all times with the target recovery of 50%.
  • Plan production ensuring that optimum output is achieved both in terms of recovery and product specs in line with market demand.
  • Ensure consistent production volumes and to achieve daily (8 hours) minimum production target of 180m3, subject to availability of logs.
  • Keeping proper maintenance records and history.
  • Ensure minimal sawmill downtimes, injuries/incidents.
  • Ensuring that sawmill critical spares are kept in stock at all times;
  • Implement carriage mill projects and make recommendations for improvements to the carriage sawmill aspects thereby  driving value.
  • Ensure compliance to occupational health and safety requirements at the carriage sawmill site premises.
  • Make recommendations for improvements to the carriage sawmill aspects thereby driving value and production level.
  • Developing and implementing growth strategies and ensuring proper training is carried out.
  • Setting of control processes to ensure zero abuses of company resources or procedures.
  • Management of the carriage sawmill workforce management in with a view to achieving positive and results driven workforce. Identification and development of successors for critical positions within the carriage sawmill.
  • Building upon energetic and engaged employees who portray a positive image for the carriage sawmill and TWIL.
  • Keeping a professional office environment with strict adherence to company rules and regulations.
  • Other duties delegated by the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Chairman in line with the scope of the position.

Work Knowledge and Experience

  1. Degree in Forestry Management, or a related field with 5–6 years’ relevant experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory/management role; either OR A Diploma in Forestry Management, or a related field with 7–8 years’ relevant experience, including at least 4 years in a supervisory/management role; either OR Extensive experience in managing and operating a sawmill or similar manufacturing/mill environment. Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements for sawmill planning, commissioning, and operations. Proven ability to plan, set targets, and lead teams to achieve operational performance goals. Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
