Job Description

The Nauru Utilities Corporation (NUC) was established under the Nauru Utilities Act 2011 (the Act) and commenced operations on 1 August 2011. NUC succeeded the Nauru Utilities Authority. The Act sets out the functions of the Corporation with respect to electricity and water services.

The Power Generation Electrical Technician was accountable for supporting the safe, reliable and timely operation of power generation plant through electrical inspection, planned maintenance, testing, fault-finding, repair, commissioning and accurate work records.

1. Power generation electrical systems maintained in a safe and serviceable condition
Completing scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on generator electrical systems, switchboards, control panels, starters, motors, batteries, chargers, protection equipment and related auxiliaries. Checking equipment condition against manuals, drawings, maintenance schedules and approved work instructions. Identifying wear, damage, overheating, loose connections, insulation defects and other emerging risks before failure occurred. Returning equipment to service only after required checks had been completed and recorded.
2. Electrical faults and breakdowns diagnosed and resolved promptly
Using approved test equipment and systematic fault-finding methods to identify the cause of electrical failures. Repairing or replacing defective components within the limits of licence, training and authorisation. Escalating complex, high-risk or recurring faults to the supervisor with clear technical information. Supporting breakdown response priorities to reduce avoidable generation downtime.
3. Electrical isolation, testing and commissioning work meet safety requirements
Following approved permits, isolation, lockout and tagout procedures before electrical work began. Verifying de-energisation and applying electrical test procedures within the scope of authorisation. Supporting installation, commissioning and functional testing of electrical equipment and controls. Stopping work and escalating conditions that created an immediate safety or operational risk.
4. Maintenance records and technical information remain accurate and current
Completing job cards, inspection records, test results and maintenance notes at the end of each assignment. Recording parts used, defects found, corrective action taken and further work required. Updating computer-based maintenance records where NUC systems required this. Keeping manuals, drawings and test information available for future maintenance and audit review.
5. Electrical risks, recurring defects and parts requirements reported early
Inspecting work areas and equipment for electrical, fire, mechanical and operational hazards. Reporting defects and deterioration that affected plant reliability, safety or compliance. Identifying critical spare parts, consumables and tools required for planned and breakdown work. Providing practical recommendations to reduce repeat faults and unplanned outages.
6. Operational priorities supported through effective collaboration
Coordinating maintenance work with power generation operators, mechanical technicians, supervisors and contractors. Providing clear updates on equipment status, work progress, risks and expected restoration times. Sharing technical knowledge and supporting safe work practices across the maintenance function. Responding to roster, overtime, standby or emergency work requirements approved by NUC.

Work Knowledge and Experience

1. Demonstrated electrical maintenance experience in power generation, utilities, heavy industry, marine, mining, manufacturing or a comparable operational environment.
2. Practical fault-finding and repair experience involving generator electrical systems, switchgear, control panels, motors, starters, batteries, chargers and protection or control systems.
3. Experience reading electrical drawings, manuals, maintenance schedules and safe work instructions.
4. Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements, electrical isolation and permit processes in an operating plant.
5. Experience completing job cards, inspection records, test results and computer-based maintenance records.
6. Desirable -Power generation, industrial electrical or generator-control training. -High-voltage or low-voltage switching, isolation or access authorisation relevant to NUC plant. -First aid, fire safety, working at heights or other plant-safety certification. -Training in computer-based maintenance management systems.
7. Current driver licence, where required for company vehicle use.
